DUNN COUNTY COUNCIL
JUNE 25, 2013
The meeting of the, Dunn County Council of the American Legion, was held at the, Veterans Center of Menomonie, Tuesday, June 25, 2013. The meeting was called to order by, Commander Dudley Markham at 7:00 P.M.
Chaplain Ron Grutt, gave the opening prayer and, Commander Markham, led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and the American Legion Premble to the Constitution.
Roll call was taken with the following post reporting: Menomonie Post #32 – 2; Elk Mound Post #37 – 1; Downing Post #232 – 2; Boyceville Post #314 – 2 and Ridgeland Post #511 – 3 for a total of 10 members present. Colfax, Wheeler, Connorsville and Eau Galle were absent.
Finance Officer Ron Grutt, reported a checkbook balance of $624.20. Motion to approve carried.
Dunn County Veterans Service Officer Greg Quinn, sent a report high-lighting various up-coming veterans events including “Welcome Them Home – Help Them Heal” workshop on Wednesday, July 10th at Our Saviors Lutheran Church sponsored by the Dunn County Veterans Ministry Group. The current backlog of VA claims is still very high with Vietnam Era claims being the highest at 38% of the total backlog due to added presumptive Agent Orange diseases.
Commander Markham, reported on various Legion events including the 10th District Conference held at River Falls on April 19-21st. Commander Markham, will be a delegate to the American Legion National Convention for the 10th District. Also the district will be holding another raffle for 2013-14 to help raise money to cover district expenses. Commander Markham, also reported on the membership card distribution being held at this meeting. He further reported on and ask other posts for reports on the Legion Birthday held in March; Memorial Day activities; Honor Guard duties; buddy Poppy sales; the R.O.T.C. Northwoods Battalion Military Ball held February 16th at UW-Stout and the Jason Church fundraisers held at the Veterans Day Concert at Mabel Tainter Theater which raised $4,000.00 and one in December at the Veterans Center of Menomonie which raised $13,000.00. Any funds remaining after expenses will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
The Commander announced that the American Legion Mid-Winter Conference will be held January 18-20, 2014 at the Ho-Chunk Conference Center in Baraboo and the 10th District Conference will be held September 21-23, 2013 in Boyd. Currently the 10th District is at 92.60% in membership Each post in attendance was asked to complete an information form and handed in at the meeting.
Commander Markham, will be attending as a delegate the State Convention in Oconomowac, Wisconsin on July 18-21st and the National Convention in San Antonio, Texas on August 26-30th. The Dunn County Fair is being held July 25-29th and help is needed to man the all veterans booth in the exhibit area. The High Ground Bike-A-Thon will pass through Menomonie for an over-night stay on Friday, August 2nd and any donations to help with expenses will be appreciated. The Post Consolidated and all other post reports were due to the State Headquarters by June 1st so please submit A.S.A.P. If any are still outstanding.
The Commander also reported on state legislation either pending or enacted including the Wisconsin Income Tax and Property Tax credits for disabled veterans and in infusion of 5.3 million dollars into the Veterans Trust Fund to fully fund our veterans homes, military funerals and all other veterans programs. On the federal level the Stolen Valor Act has been reinstated and the VA is hiring more personnel to handle the claims backlog as well as mental health professionals to meet the needs of returning vets with PTSD. Also, more housing through the VA and HUD is becoming available for the homeless veterans.
The next council meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at the Veterans Center of Menomonie.
Following the closing prayer by, Chaplain Grutt, the meeting was adjourned at 8:01 P.M.
